Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that emphasizes ground fighting and submission holds to control and defeat an opponent. The use of leverage, timing and technique is essential. The fundamentals classes include stretching and mobility to begin. Beginners are welcome to observe and participate at their own pace. Our principled approach to jiujitsu will aid you to develop situational awareness as well as learning skills to defend yourself against the larger and stronger opponents.
Starting something new can feel a bit intimidating, but we’re here to help every step of the way! Whether you’re 6 or 60, athletic or not, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and self-defense training are for everyone. Here are answers to the most common questions new students (and parents) have.
1. Do I need to be in shape before starting?
Nope! BJJ is for all fitness levels. You’ll build strength, flexibility, and endurance naturally through training. Everyone starts somewhere, and our classes are designed to help you progress at your own pace.
2. Will I get hurt? How safe is the training?
We will work closely with and guide your practice. You will be in a controlled environment where you’ll learn to practice techniques safely with a partner. We’ll teach you how to tap (signal submission) to avoid injury. Safety is our top priority.
3. How long does it take to get a belt promotion? is a journey, not a race. Promotions are based on skill, consistency, and personal growth — not just time on the mat. Everyone progresses differently, and each belt earned is a huge accomplishment!
4. What should I expect in my first class?
Expect a warm welcome! Classes usually start with a light warm-up, followed by learning techniques, practicing with a partner, and optional sparring (rolling). Don’t worry — we’ll pair you with someone experienced who can help you feel comfortable.
5. How often should I train as a beginner?
Twice a week is a great start! It gives you time to learn and build your skills without feeling overwhelmed. As you get more comfortable, you can train more often if you’d like.
6. Do I need previous experience in martial arts or sports?
Not at all. Many of our students had no prior experience before starting. BJJ is all about technique and problem-solving — you’ll learn everything step by step.
7. What if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?
That’s totally normal at first. Everyone here remembers their first class, and we’re all rooting for you. Take breaks when needed, and know that you’re in a supportive environment.
8. Is there a dress code or etiquette I should know?
Yes, but it’s simple! Wear something comfortable that you can move in. T-shirt, leggings or athletic shorts (preferably without zippers) are recommended. Be respectful to your training partners, practice good hygiene, and listen to your instructors. We’ll go over everything on your first day.
9. What is the difference between BJJ and self-defense training?
BJJ focuses on grappling techniques, control, and submissions — great for sport and self-defense. Our self-defense classes are tailored to real-world situations, teaching you how to stay safe and get out of danger.
1. Is BJJ safe for kids?
Yes! BJJ is a controlled and safe environment where kids learn at their own pace. Instructors emphasize technique and safety while building confidence and discipline.
2. Will training help my child’s confidence and discipline?
Absolutely. BJJ teaches kids how to set goals, overcome challenges, and build mental resilience — all while having fun and making friends.
3. How do you handle bullying situations in class?
We teach kids to stay calm, avoid confrontation, and defend themselves if absolutely necessary. More importantly, they gain the confidence to de-escalate situations peacefully.
4. What if my child doesn’t like it after a few classes?
That’s okay! Some kids take time to adjust, while others dive right in. We encourage trying a few classes to see if it’s a good fit.
5. Are there competitions for kids? Do they have to compete?
Competitions are completely optional. Some kids love the challenge, while others prefer to train for fun and self-defense. We support whichever path they choose.
6. What life skills will my child learn beyond self-defense?
BJJ teaches patience, perseverance, problem-solving, and respect — skills that carry over into school, sports, and life.
1. Am I too old to start?
Not at all! BJJ is about technique, not strength or youth. Many people start in their 40s, 50s, or even 60s. The only "too late" is never starting.
2. Will training be too hard on my body?
We prioritize safety and encourage training at your own pace. Communicate with your instructor, and we’ll help you adapt techniques to suit your body.
3. How do I prevent injuries and recover from soreness?
Proper warm-ups, tapping early, and listening to your body are key. After class, stretching and staying hydrated help with recovery.
4. Can I train if I have previous injuries or medical conditions?
In most cases, yes — but please consult your doctor first. Let us know about any limitations so we can modify techniques for you.
5. Is there a slower-paced or beginner-friendly class?
Yes! We offer classes specifically for beginners, and our instructors ensure everyone progresses at a pace that feels right.
1. What if I’m not athletic or flexible?
That’s totally fine! BJJ isn’t about being athletic — it’s about learning leverage, technique, and timing. You’ll naturally improve your fitness over time.
2. Will I be paired with people at my skill level?
Yes! Beginners train with other beginners or experienced students who help guide them.
3. Is BJJ more about technique than strength?
100%. BJJ is known as "the gentle art" because smaller, weaker people can use technique to control larger opponents.
1. Will I have to train with men?
We aim to create a comfortable training environment. You’re welcome to request female partners or attend women-only classes if available.
2. What if I feel uncomfortable with close contact?
It’s completely normal to feel this way at first. Our instructors and students respect personal boundaries, and we’ll help you ease into training at your own comfort level.
3. Does BJJ help with real-life self-defense?
Absolutely. BJJ is highly effective for defending yourself against larger, stronger attackers by using leverage and positioning.
1. How much does training cost? Are there hidden fees?
We offer different membership options, and we’re upfront about pricing. No hidden fees here!
2. Do I need to buy a gi right away?
Not immediately. You can try a few classes first, and we’ll guide you when it’s time to get your own.
3. What other gear do I need?
A mouthguard is helpful, and for no-gi classes, a rash guard and athletic shorts work great.
4. What is the class structure like?
Classes start with a warm-up, followed by technique drills, partner practice, and optional sparring. We finish with questions and feedback.

You’re already one step closer by asking questions. BJJ is a journey, and we’re excited to be part of yours. Whether you’re here to learn self-defense, get in shape, or just try something new — welcome to the family. Let’s get started!
